I think this may be the part of the facade depicted in the camera lucida rendering Frederick Catherwood made here in 1840. The man was a stone genius, little recognized, and much ripped off.

Also - notice that in the middle of many of the faces there's the remnant of a broken off nose. Looking at these masks - it slowly strikes you that each face shares an "ear" with the next one. This is true except for the middle of the bottom course of masks - down between what early observers called "ornamental steps" - it being so alien an appearance they couldn't see that they were walking on the god's heads.
