I like this one. I'd waited about two hours for this and the sun was finally
coming up and around the front of the facade. These guys knew what they were
doing - it looked as though you'd have straight down illumination around
high noon at midsummer
You can really see the signature curved nose of the chaak representation.
On the flat of each nose where it joins the face plane there are two 2" diameter
by 2" deep holes about 2" apart. There were traces of animal fats and wax
soaked wick found in some of them and the speculation is that all of the
noses had twin lights on them to illuminate all the painted faces.
Yes, the noses are that wide, and yes there were traces of polychrome paint
all over the place even after centuries had gone by. On a still moonlit night
it must have been a real knockout
